Still on holiday...will be back later

By Svati, Health Guide Thursday, June 12, 2008

Ok, so here's part II of my report on being pump-free! (Read Svati's first post if you missed it!)

Things are still working well. Probably the biggest impact the new regimen has had is the almost total absence of hypoglycemia. The levemir keeps my blood sugars so steady and all it takes is one shot every twelve hours, the same dose every time, with no adjusting or guessing: the perfect basal rate. While it keeps my sugars hovering above the hypoglycemic range, it does not let them get too high, either. It also gives me some leverage with how well I calculate the Novolog dose for my meals. Somehow, even if I eat a little more or less sometimes and do not adjust the Novolog amount, my blood sugar does not end up that far off from my target. The result is less of the infamous "rollercoaster effect" that we all struggle with.

Unfortunately, I now have one more hurdle to jump over in terms of my diabetes. Next week I am having my wisdom teeth removed (all four of 'em!) and for the first time ever I will be given anesthesia. That is scary enough for someone without diabetes, so, as a diabetic who has just changed her treatment method, I am a little worried, to say the least. The doctor said that he would give me an IV with glucose in it during the surgery to keep my blood sugar from going low, and since I won't eat that morning I will not have any Novolog on board, just Levemir. Novolog is usually the culprit in hypoglemic episodes, so my blood sugars should be fine, I think! I hope! Undecided

It's a good thing that I went off the pump already, because I think things will be much simpler if I do not have to deal with it for the procedure. Can you imagine it alarming or going off or something during the surgery? Haha. Anyway, let me know if you have gone through similar experiences before and how you dealt with them. Thanks! I will be sure to write all about my little story next week...
