Swimming With Insulin Pumps

Many insulin pumps are waterproof, but this doesnt mean that we have to wear them in the water. I don't ever swim with my pump on, because I have no place to clip it and don't see the harm in being disconnected for short periods of time. However, I do know people with diabetes who go in the pool and ...

Hey!

Personally, I have never swam with my pump.  It  feels so risky, and who needs a broken pump?

Last summer I did Surf and Scuba Camp, where we spent almost the entire day in the water.  Because we were in the ocean for such long periods of time, I knew that I had to be really careful about making sure that I got enough insulin.  I got out of the water every half hour or so, and took small boluses, trying to almost replicate what the pump does when it delivers the basal insulin.  It took some experimentation- with the added activity especially- but I found that consistency was the most important.

I have considered taking lantis on beach vacations, and using my pump only for boluses at meals.  I feel that this would help avoid any possible keytones or high blood sugars that can happen when the pump is disconnected for too long.

Has anyone else tried this approach?

Anna,

I do know people who use lantus for weeks at a time over the summer to avoid the problems that come with constantly disconnecting/reconnecting the pump. This approach seems to work well for them..... I would definitely try it!

I have two girls who love to swim, ages 6 and 4. I have a website biz for boys and girls who wear the pump. Clothes for the pump. Check it out. www.twirlygirlyskirts.com.  I have options for bathing suits, among other clothes. With the suits, I no longer have to worry about them going high.

Thanks!

Claire
