SmartInsulin: The Next Best Thing?

Researchers might be on the verge of a huge breakthrough in diabetes care. Right now, experiments are being conducted with a new type of insulin - an insulin that, if all goes well, would only need to be taken once a day to control blood sugars.   SmartInsulin was developed by a biotech c...

I was also at Dr. Zion's presentation in DC. I think SmartInsulin is amazing, and hopefully will make our lives much easier! I've been googling and searching the internet for more info ever since I first heard about it.

I am so excited about Dr. Zion's research and the prospect of SmartInsulin,  not only as an employee of JDRF, but as a person living with type 1.  Thanks for the great article!

Hi,

Can you confirm that Dr Zion stated this therapy could be avalible as early as 2014? The only reason I ask is because another person I've been in brief touch with claims that Dr Zion stated the Human trials are first beginning 3-4 years from now. Based on the presentation I saw online it looks to me the trials should start sometime in 2010 so I am confussed. This will be the miracle treatment for diabetics if it pans out. I am not a teenager and been struggling with diabetes for nearly 35 years. IMO the JDRF should dump every dime they can to hopefully get this product to us as fast as humanly possible. I know realistically it will still be a few more years at best but even a year sooner is a year less we have to suffer.

I actually visited the SmartCells lab this week and spoke to Zion personally. Rest assured that they are on the brink of starting human clinical trials, and they do plan on having those up and running in 2010. I agree that JDRF should put all they have into this project... That's not to say that they haven't invested enough already, but the more the better! Talking to Zion and seeing firsthand how things are going in the lab made me even more confident that this is the next big thing.

That is great news. Both me and my pop are insulin dependent and he has more trouble with the lows. Me, I get physical and emotional distress from the swings which are impossible to keep in the normal range but only once in a while. SmartInsulin may very well save my life. I am praying for this breakthrough! Please express my gratitude towards Dr Zion for trying to help us.
