Today's Question: Wearing a prom dress

By Ginger Vieira, Health Guide Tuesday, November 13, 2007
What did you do with your insulin pump when you wore a prom dress?I was really nervous about this, too. I told my doctor I was going to disconnect from my pump for most of prom and just give an occasional bolus to sort of pose as "basal rates" -- which isn't really the best solution. &n...

wel, i'll have to admit, i never thought about how my diabetes would effect me in my prom dress. but thats probably good considering im a guy! anyway, i can relate to this tho cause when i'm playin basketball i always feel awkward about the injections, i usually take a long water break and come back.

i saw adam morrisson (used to play b-ball for gonzaga) taking an injection on the bench, so it's realy nothing to be embarassed about, actually, i now do it in public cause i think it makes me look tougher (in my dreams!)

Hey Tyson!

So you don't wear a dress to the prom... :)

I think somebody seeing you taking an insulin shot on the bench could absolutely make you look tougher (which you are :) --but only if they know what diabetes is, right? Some people who are uneducated about the disease might be frightened by the sight of this, ya know? So it's good to remember who your audience is!

Either way, you're awesome. And if you want to wear a dress to prom, that's fine, too :)

Hi All! I got married this summer (okay, I confess that I am not a teenager anymore, but I thought that this comment could be helpful). I got a pocket sewn into the inside of my dress and wore my pump underneath and no one knew. It was nice cause I could do my usual routine without switching to injections and risking lows... I didn't even have to get up from the table to bolus.

Of course this depends on the style of the dress. If your dress is tighter, then you can wear a skirt slip and have a pocket sewn on in a place where the skirt isn't that tight. You can put your infusion set in a place where is won't be visible, even further down on your leg.

There are options where  you can stick to your routine and not think about diabetes on your prom night :) I danced with my pump safely in its pocket and didn't even notice it!

Thanks for the additional method that I totally didn't mention!!! I tried playing with a velcro-type pump strap thing to go around my thigh, but it just didn't work for me and the dress I was wearing! Sounds like you much more creative and patient than I was! Thanks for writing! (We don't mind non-teenagers here :)
