Other Reasons To Aim For Good Blood Sugars

By Ginger Vieira, Health Guide Wednesday, December 12, 2007

So I've been weightlifting a lot and my trainer (also a well-ecucated nutritionist) explained to me how having high blood sugar during or after my training will prevent me from building as much muscle!

WHAT?! But...but I want to build muscle! AHHH!

This makes me want to have good blood sugars SO MUCH MORE than simply the everyday pressure of knowing high blood sugars will lead to all those diabetes-related complications. I started checking my blood sugar at least 8 times a day, always before and after exercise and a few hours after that. And I can't say it's actually always right in range because of this, but when it is high it's not high for very long because I check so often!

It's kind of like being told to read a great book by a teacher -- it ruins the fun of the book...but when I get to read that book on my own time, I would actually enjoy it!

The same goes exercise in general, I really don't feel good or enjoy exercising when my blood sugar is high -- it ruins all the fun! So that motivates me to keep it in range so I can really give it my all when I workout.

Does anybody else find exercising kind of nauseating when their blood sugar's over 200? Anybody else have a good reason (besides complications) that motivates them to keep their blood sugar in check?

"Should" v.s. "Can" v.s. "Choose"
