ASK GINGER - My symptoms for hypoglycemia are always different!

By Ginger Vieira, Health Guide Sunday, November 23, 2008

When I’m teaching yoga: to put it simply, I suddenly feel very lazy when I drop low during my yoga classes. And to me it’s an odd feeling because I always love doing yoga,  I could do it for hours, so I really, really notice when my brain says, ”Geez, I’d really rather take a nap.”

I really hate when my blood sugar drops low when I’m teaching a yoga class because that means I have to go grab my glucose tabs from my bag and still try to teach the class. It interrupts everything! So I try really hard to check a few times and eat well before a yoga class to keep this from happening.

Most importantly, I make sure I don’t dismiss any slight feelings no matter what I’m doing. If you feel “funny” while you’re playing video games or while you’re at church with your family, don’t ignore it! Treat every odd symptom carefully. All you have to do to confirm what your body is trying to tell you about hypoglycemia is TEST YOUR BLOOD SUGAR! You could even start keeping a journal of what symptoms you felt during different activities and see if you can find a few patterns.

Keeping a journal may seem tedious and annoying, but it may help you in the long run as you start to notice more consistent patterns in your diabetes management!
