What most people living with diabetes don't hear is that current research says that most people living with Diabetes will die from old age or some of aging issue unrelated to Diabetes. A stat that all the non profits won't promote! They fear a loss of revenue to develop more research.
So really good health and longevity lies in the hands of each of us! You choose, old age or complications because you bought someone else's tagline!
Off for my run and yoga class! AHHHH! Care to join me Gin? ~A

Colleen!
Thanks for posting. Glad to hear you're making steps towards taking better care of yourself! Definitely during my sophomore year of college was when my A1C increased and I let a lot of things come before diabetes. Really, we can't expect to be able to give it our everything throughout our entire life. Just like there are times when we slack off on exercise or eating well because of other things going on in life, the same can be true about taking care of diabetes....BUT important part is too eventually get back on the horse! :)
Keep it up, like you said, little steps. Let me know if there's any way I can help or if there's anything you'd like to see Diabeteens write about!

Oh Ginger, your post really makes me want to whip my butt into shape. I have to admit that I am a lot like the person you described in the beginning, and it's pathetic. I am 22 years old, diabetic for 17, and have had so much great diabetes care and education throughout my life. I know how to be "in control" - carb counting, proper nutrition, basals, boluses (I'm on a pump), regular exercise, etc. etc. But the past few years I have become more and more neglectful of my diabetes and my health. I know I need to take action to change my situation. I think you are such a positive voice and I really admire your attitude and approach to life and your diabetes care. Thank you for all your thoughtful posts.
Hey Abby!
Thanks for the comment. Sounds like you've got all the knowledge and you're working on mustering up the energy to put it all into practice!
I think we get overwhelmed when we think about having to do EVERY LITTLE THING perfectly, and it's like "Well if I can't do ALL OF THAT...then...why should do any of it?" ...but it's okay to just as much as you can, you know?
So maybe start with counting carbs more closely or start with going to the gym more often...and build up gradually!
17 years with diabetes: you get an award! :) Or virtual high-five?
