Dear Ginger,My daughter is barely eight years old and has had Type 1 since she was five. We used to check her blood sugar half-way through the night most nights, but started backing off after the year and just make sure to always check before bedtime. She’s getting to the age where she wants to...

as i read this i just sent my daughter to 5 days at outdoor ed, away without us. she's pumping and i'm running 20% less basals, and i just pray it goes well. my fear is during the evening, of course. our doc also said she needs to be able to do this, while i know she can, i always worry about nighttimes... she knows she's going to be higher than average for 4 days (doc said this would be fine) i am just trusting that she remembers everything. I nkow she's smart, she's 12 but still a kid too, it can be scary.
Oh good for you! That's great she's getting to see what her diabetes is like on her own. And your doc is right, it is totally okay if she's struggling to balance for a few days...throughout her life her insulin needs will change and she will need to learn to rebalance them, because of age, activity, work, stress, etc.
And in the end, your daughter wants to keep herself healthy so she will do what she needs to in order to get the most from this 5-day experience! Give her a high-five no matter what those numbers look like. It is scary, but a very cool woman once told me, "Fear is okay, it's normal. If the fear paralyzes you, that's when it's a problem."
Hope she comes back having learned a lot about her disease!
Ginger
