Non-diabetic Friends & Strangers...and the things they say!

By Ginger Vieira, Health Guide Sunday, April 05, 2009

We can’t complain that non-diabetics don’t understand what diabetes is like if we also complain about them asking us questions! We are the experts on diabetes. Just last night at a friend’s party, a new friend of mine saw me eat a piece of chocolate and she said, “Is that okay? What’ll that do to your blood sugar?”

“I just need to take insulin for it,” I explained. “The same way I would if I ate carbs like a bowl of brown rice.”

“Oh, okay. Sorry, I didn’t know,” she said.

“No problem. Thanks for looking out for me,” I smiled.

If I were ever in the middle of a low blood sugar and she was around, I know she’d be concerned and there for me if I needed help.

I know there are a lot of people in school who may tease you and purposefully say unkind things, but don’t confuse them with the ones who are genuinely concerned and want to learn more about what you deal with every day as a person with diabetes. Take the time to help educate people around you, and don't forget to keep asking questions, too.
