Lasik Eye Surgery & Diabetes!

Thanks for the post! I have been thinking about Lasik for a while now, but wasn't sure what it was like and whether I'd even be eligible (as a Type 1). It's great to hear that a fellow diabetic survived the surgery and is doing well with it! :)

Hi,

I'm new here in this forum, I found your topic is so useful.

I have type-I DM for almost 2 years now (I'm 26 yrs old)

I'm planing on doing Lasik, and i'm going to check up my eyes

on this mid november so I would like to ask you a few questions how to prepare myself before eye examination if you don't mind.

Does the blood sugar have to be controlled strictly before eye exam?

Because I heard about how the fluctuation of blood sugar can lead to corneal edema, and in diabetes we have fluctuation of vision all the time so it makes me worry about that , my latest A1C (last 3 months) was 7.3. And I sometimes have hyper and sometimes have hypo. Thank you for reading my message. And thank you for this topic to let me know about Lasik and makes me feel more confident to do it.

Thank you.

Aire

Normally, you should be able to get LASIK regardless of whether you have diabetes. However, I would check both with your normal physician and your optometrist just to be safe. Here at our Austin LASIK office we have performed this with no issues at all.
