Diabetic Lineman on Boston College Football Team!

Rich Lapham was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 13 years old, but today is a lineman on the Boston College football team. Lapham was recently featured in the Boston Herald for his athletic perseverence despite his Type 1 diabetes, and just like the rest of us: diabetes is challenging for him, too, but he simply doesn't let it get in the way of his goals.

Using Protein to Your Advantage with Diabetes

I’m a big fan of protein, not just because it builds muscle and helps me get stronger in terms of my powerlifting training, but because I can literally use protein to help my body burn fat, stablize my blood sugar, and use it for glucose fuel before I even reach for a carbohydrate.

It’s true: carbs are the quickest, most efficient form of energy. When you eat carbs, it doesn’t take long to feel the boost of energy...

ASK GINGER - Does diabetes ever make you depressed?

Hey Ginger,

Does diabetes ever make you depressed? A kid in my high school has diabetes and he told me he also goes to a doctor because his diabetes makes him depressed. I get really angry about my diabetes sometimes, and it’s been getting worse since I got into high school. I just wish I didn’t have it, and didn’t have to deal with it. It doesn’t seem like you’re depressed, how do you keep diabetes from doing...

ASK GINGER - My energy is zonked when my blood sugar is all over the place?

Hey Ginger,

I know that blood sugars that aren't in control, like a low blood sugar, can make you feel really tired, and highs make me feel pretty groggy. My energy is just totally zonked when my blood sugars are all over the place. If I wake up with a high bs then I don't even wanna get out of bed! But I had a question about whether it's okay to workout and exercise when your blood sugars are all over the place on a certain day. I...

Lasik Eye Surgery & Diabetes!

My biggest fear before going to the free eye screening for Lasik surgery was definitely my diabetes. Some people aren’t candidates for Lasik because their corneas aren’t thick enough to reshape or because their vision is out of the acceptable range for correction, but I was worried that diabetics in general weren’t candidates. We don’t have a reputation for healing well (due to lack of poor blood sugar control) and we...

ASK GINGER - Is it normal to need to adjust my insulin doses sometimes?

Dear Ginger,

It seems like the amount of insulin I need changes, sometimes just for a day, like around exercise, or sometimes it's like it's changed for a big period of time, and I'm going low a lot. I started trying to eat healthier, and I kept having a ton of lows, so how I do eat better but not crash all the time? Is it normal to have changes so quickly?

Hey Ginger,

I've heard a little bit about Advanced Glycogenated End-Products but I don't really get what they are. My doctor usually only talks about my A1C level and all the complications I could get later on...is it the same thing?

Understanding your A1C reading with your eAG: Estimated Average Glucose

Every three to six months we have our A1C measured…but what does that number really mean? You know it’s a measure of your average blood sugar reading, but when was the last time your blood glucose monitor gave you a percentage? Your A1C is essentially a measurement of the Advanced Glycogenated End-products that have accumulated in your blood from blood sugar levels…the higher our blood sugars are, the more AGEs are present in...
