Thursday, April 09, 2009 at 04:27 PMif you look at the video of the band performing ( http://www.bhsbandalumni.org/files/EastKentwoodHSInvitationalHigh.mov ) then you'd probably see why my blood sugar needs to be higher for performances. The band at my school is very physical, I'm still waiting for the 7am-11pm every day band camp week coming up later this year to see how well I really have this whole thing down.
It does actually help a great deal to have my blood sugar high at these shows because if it drops during or right after (which is usuall when it does due to the adrenaline rush being over) then it's still high.

Thursday, April 09, 2009 at 01:07 PMHey, nice post! i play trumpet at my high school too, although i was diagnosed a while ago. we dont have a marching band (i wish we did!), but i play in the pit band for the school musicals. i realized a couple years ago that if my blood sugars were to low or high while i played i sounded pretty terrible...
..now i like to keep glucose tabs right on the stand next to my valve oil and my meter on the floor next to my mutes. i usually try to keep my blood sugar around 150 when i play though b/c i find that i mess up rythyms and cant hit high notes if my sugar is too high--do you have that problem by keeping your blood sugar at 300? i know that marching is different than sitting and playing. i use a temp. basal for longer performances and stuff, when i know i'll miss a meal, and that works well, you could test that out if youre on a pump.
but good job sticking with marching band after being diagnosed..diabetics are the best trumpet players anyway :)

Hey - great post!
Thta's awesome you stuck with the marching band after your diagnosis (totally helps to see somebody doing somthing with diabetes when you though you might not be able to, right? Anything is possible!).
So does it work well for you to be up at 300 before an event, as opposed to getting in 15 to 30 grams of carbs right before the event so that instead of spiking up to 300, you'd hopefully use the carbs as you're with the band?
