I need advice about keteoacids ASAP!!

By Krystal Sunday, January 24, 2010

Hi Ginger and anyone else that has experience in this, like a doctor or a in the hospital with keteoacids, I need info asap!

My dad is a type 1 diabetic, on the wekend we had to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital, they tested him and he has keteoacids, he is started to get better, still in hospital, and his blood sugar is really really high!! He isnt eating much of the food they bring for him, yet his blood sugar is still very high and the hospital staff is accusing him of eating something other than what they are bringing to him because he's not eating their food and his blood sugar is so high. Im not sure where they think he is getting this supposed other food because he cant even get out of bed to get anything, so i guess they think we are bringing him in food but we are not!

Then today i looked at his menu plan that the hospital dietitian has him on, I am also a diabetic and this is what i as a healthy diabetic would eat on my plan, but my dad right now is in the hospital because he was going into a coma from the keytone levels in his blood and right now cant stabilize his blood sugar levels, well here is what they were feeding him today, is this right for someone with the above mentioned or what should they be giving him, please help me i want to save my dad.

Today he had apple slices, smokies, peas, cabbage and rice casserole with beef, perogies, sour cream,  and for a night time snack they brought him cookies and juice!!!!!!!! And they cant figure out why his blood sugar wont go down!!!!!! My dad said the cookie was pretty sweet!! For breakfast they gave him orange marmalade with 2 slices of toast and apple slices!!!!!

I think they should  not be feeding him fruit right now until he is stabilized, and definately not cookies and juice, he doesnt even have that at home, he is a water or tea/coffee drinker, only has juice or cookies when his sugar is really low!!

I am so angry right now, and i mentioned this to his nurse and they told me i was being ridicules!!!!

They should be giving him oatmeal or fibre one cereal with skim milk, a hard boiled egg and tea for breakfast with a small carton of milk.

For a snack cottage cheese, or yogurt, or maybe a few slices of cheese with some crackers.

And lunch some soup, some kind of healthier veggies other than peas, and for dinner not anything high in fat or grease like a smokie!!

I feel like taking him meals and snacks from home and dumping the stuff they are giving him!!

They are prolonging his stay by feeding him this stuff, they wont let him come home until he is stabilized and they are making it worse by feeding him jam and cookies!!!!!

If this keeps up after  speaking to them today, do i have the right to place a complaint or am i being ridicules as the nurse said and can i bring him food from home?

I want my dad to come home and get better, please anyone that has experience as a patient or a professional please help me!!

You are ENTIRELY correct that all those carbohydrates and juice and fruits they are giving your dad is NOT HELPING. Medical professionals generally advocated the 2000 calorie balanced diet that encompasses all food groups.

As you probably know, going low-carb-and higher-protein can make a HUGE DIFFERENCE.

See these links: http://www.healthcentral.com/diabeteens/c/27511/94103/advantage

If I were you-- yes, I would tell the medical professionals your father needs higher-protein, low-carb meals. Veggies with  lean deli meats or chicken. Egg whites. Nuts. And more veggies.

This will help his BG stabalize.

In addition, they should be giving him MORE INSULIN for all those carbs they're feeding him, and an a SALINE IV to help flush out all of the ketones!

I hope this helps. Please let me know if they listen to you!

Thank you Ginger!

Well today we were at the hospital visiting him, we got there at 10am and stayed until 230pm, my dads blood sugar was high again, they gave him only 5units of insulin after breakfast, for breakfast they gave him a cinnamon apple muffin and grape jam, rice crispies, strawberries, and greasy bacon!

His blood sugar was normal range before breakfast, after it was really high, and we also found out at lunch time they did NOT give him a shot of insulin!! We complained about that because his blood sugar was high after breakfast and they didnt even bother to give him an insulin shot before lunch, so when we went to complain about this to the nurses they told us that they gave him insulin at 1130, we said no you did not we were here, so then they said oh it was at 11 then, again we said no you did not we were here!! So they said they are going to give him a shot at 3pm, well he had lunch at 12pm, not 3pm!!!! No wonder his sugar is high!!

At home he take his insulin 15 min before he eats, and he takes 16 units with everymeal as per his regular dietition, not 5 units 3 hours after a meal!!!!

I am so angry!!!! They are making my dad sick, so my sister and i decided that we are making a complaint about this hospital with!!

They are blaming my dad for his high blood sugar, dont they realize what they are feeding him, and that they are not giving him enough insulin based on the carbs in the meals from them, and that you cant take your insulin 3 hours after a meal!!!!!!!!

They are to blame NOT my dad!!!!!

Doctors are not always right and they can definitely make mistakes.

Stand up for your father and keep speaking up! He's lucky to have you!!!

Krystal --- just checking in..is your dad still in the hospital?????

Hi Ginger

No he is not, he was finally able to come home on Sunday!

I kept his meal plan that the dietition in the hospital made for him, i emailed our dietition and she was not impressed. She agrees that the meal plan is okay for a diabetic not in the hospital with ketones and high blood sugar, but couldnt understand why they were giving him juice/cookie/and jam when he they were 'trying'to get his sugars back to normal. or why they were waiting 3 hours AFTER the meal to give him insulin!! Also they were not giving him enough insulin to cover the carbs they were giving him to eat.

I will show you what they were giving him, i kept the plan for reference, his blood sugar readings in Canadian units were way in the 30's, like on this particular day of the plan i will show you in his logbook he wrote down his sugar at lunch as 35!! This reading was at 12:30, the nurse didnt give him a shot until 3:45, so his sugar went up even higher, so high that his meter would only read 'HIGH'!! Then with that reading they only gave him 5 units of insulin!! Now that he is home and eating better, and taking his insulin BEFORE meals his sugar hasnt been over 10!!

So anyway here is what he was eating that day his sugar was extreme:

Breakfast:

Grape jam

Bacon

Cranberry muffin(everyday they gave him a sweet muffin for breakfast or a big bagel)

Corn flakes

Strawberries

orange juice

Lunch:

beef lasagna

crackers

pasta soup

lemon tart

Supper:

french fries

fish sticks

tartar sauce

diced turnip

crackers

pasta soup

blueberry brown sugar cookies

Snack:

tuna sandwhich
