Caffeine affect BG's?

Yesterday I was at my grandparents' house, and I had quite a few diet sodas...about 3. I was taking insulin for my all the food I was eating, and I was correcting my BG as needed. However, as dinner came around, and I was going to the bathroom about every hour, and drinking more than any normal person would, I checked my BG and I was over 500. So, does caffeine affect your BG? Because I was taking insulin all day long, and being above 500 after that was frustrating...

YES - caffeine can effect BGs. Absolutely.

ALSO -- while DietCoke may be calorie free and sugar free, 3 cokes in one day is not going to do your body any favors. Aside from quite a bit of caffeine, the chemicals in DietCoke are aplenty, and overall it will have a dehydrating effect on your body and addiction to the caffeine.

Hey there!

I get huge caffeine spikes, but only in the mornings from coffee. However, I find that it's often hard to isolate exactly what caused my spike since there are often so many variables in the mix. For example, I usually have coffee with milk or cream, which adds a few carbs, as well as breakfast soon after. For you, it's important to remember what else you had to eat and what your BG's were before eating. If you didn't checking your BG all afternoon, your numbers could have slid up to 500 over a long period of time because of illness, because your insulin was expired or ruined, or because your set is broken (if you're pumping). In other words, you might be able to prevent future spikes if you find out just what caused this incidence.

On a different note, I'm sorry this happened to you! I'm a confessed diet soda drinker, and it stinks to have to avoid or treat differently a supposedly "free" food/drink. Even though, as Ginger said, h20 really is best, I like Crystalite and herbal teas, neither of which have caffeine.
