Hi, I'm Maggie! I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2007, the summer before I started high school. I live with my parents, my 14-year-old brother, my dog Ellie, and my cat Daisy. I wear a Minimed Paradigm 722 pump and a continuous glucose monitor. I love learning new things, especially about science and languages. When I get older, I want to be a doctor and work with Doctors Without Borders. However, I still have plenty of time to change my mind! One of my favorite hobbies is running. I ran my first half marathon the spring of 2009, and I'm training for another this fall. Long-distance running has made me much more careful about my blood sugars, even when I'm not super-active. I enjoy learning about exercise science and the way fueling affects athletes, diabetic or not. I also love traveling. I speak (almost) fluent French, and I'm learning Arabic. I've traveled all over Western Europe with my family, and in the summer of 2008 I lived with a host family in Finland for 6 weeks as an AFS student ambassador. This experience forced me to be more independent and responsible for my diabetes care. Interestingly, Finland has the world's incidence of Type 1 Diabetes. Send me a message if you have any questions or if you'd just like to talk. I look forward to getting to know you all! Maggie
