i am hopeful

By DiabeticSteph19 Wednesday, July 23, 2008

That's me!I was recently admitted into the hospital, yet again, for DKA. It wasn't too long ago that I didn't even know what this meant.  In a really short amount of time i was hospitalized many times for DKA. Almost every visit was a close encounter to my death.I have recently started to lose my vision and I have started to notice changes in my behaviors. I am always tired and drowsy at the drop of a hat and I can't be as physically active as I used to be because my heart rate speeds up. I am always feeling nauseous and thirsty. I have been none to visit the bathroom more than ten times in just one day on average. I am tired of the side effects that my uncontrolled Diabetes has caused. I have a poor self- image and realization of the truth. I want to be healthy and happy. I want to be in control of my Diabetes, but i don't change. I am afraid that when i finally decide to do something about it that it will be too late. I guess what I am looking for now is a good support group of people my age who are dealing with the same things.I am hopeful and I want to make a good change forever.

DKA is no fun... I've had about 10 or so full-blown DKAs in my lifetime so I feel your pain.  I myself have been classified as a "brittle" diabetic and managing my sugars is difficult sometimes so now I just go to the doctors all the time to try to remedy this. Feel free to message me or comment me whenever... maybe we can be a support for each other

I am so glad  you responded! It's nice to talk to somebody who can understand. I love my friends, but they can't relate. I would love to be eachother's support.  I feel like this might help me to take better care of my diabetes. I read your story about being a Diabulimic. I was or I guess I still am one. I want to get  better. I am tired of experiencing all  of the things that you go through when  you aren't in good health as a diabetic....anyways, I  am 19 years old and I am going to  college. I want to be a nurse or at least something in the medical field. I  am not sure yet. I work at a pizza place. I live in Marietta,  Georgia. What about you?

Hi Steph!

I know Tressa already said this, but...DKA is the worst! UUUUGH.

What do you think is the hardest part about keeping your blood sugars in range for you?  What do you think could help? Checking more? Increasing your insulin?

I know it's hard, obviously, to find that balance with insulin and food so that you can really feel GOOD, but I can also tell you I know it's possible to find it with a lot work. What do you think would help you?

Well I actually work full time at a bookstore right now... I'm aslo a Certified Nursing Assistent... but would one day like to be a Diabetes Educator... but I'm going to start off as an RN.  I live in the Washington DC area...

That's cool! I thought about being a certified nursing assistant while trying to get my degree. Do you like it? How long did it take you to become one?

I don't know what it is that makes it so hard for me. I guess it's just everything that adds up. I think that I need to take more of an interest in my diabetes. I am trying to surround myself with people who can help me. I  just need some support and to realize that there are other people who are doing it and doing it well. Like I said, I am hopeful! I read all of the links that you sent to me. They were helpful. I like hearing about the pros and especially the cons. I didn't realize that they were expensive. I am going to have to look into that.It sounds like overall the pump is great and really makes it easy to take control. Thanks for all of  the advice!

CNA is definetly a cool thing to have while trying to get a nursing degree... especially if you're working at a facility that offeres tuition reinbursment.  The class was about three months and then a month later you take the board exams.  I'm currently not doing anything with the certification because it's hard to find a CNA job that isn't in a nursing home.  While I don't mind nursing home care I just didn't agree with how the facility wanted care done.  It's a hard job but if you're up to it I say go for it.

cool!...I thought it was about two years! Three months sounds so much better. I was thinking that since you get paid really well it could help put me through college.
