If one more person asks me to smile I'm going to SCREAM!!!!

By krystal Monday, July 14, 2008

I work in retail, not the best place for a diabetic to work on days when all you want to do is stay in bed, it's stressful and stressful some more and the customers can be down right mean and unreasonable! I work in an upscale department store, similar to Macy's, or Saks, I am a department head so I'm there fulltime dealing with people yelling at me because the line is too long and I'm working by myself, besides working the register I'm expected to work on the sales floor helping customers also , so I get yelled at because someone needs help finding a size and color of a scarf that we clearly don't have ,do they expect me to grab a needle and thread and sew them what they are having a baby fit over, I turn around and someone is yelling at me to ring them up on thr register, sorry but you can see i'm with 2 other customers!

Funny how no managers are around to assist when it is busy, but they magically appear out of thin air when all the craziness has calmed, just to pestor you on your sales goals, and how many department store credit cards did you force your customers to sighn up for, and how many customers did you force to use those cards etc.....

After all this and missing my lunch break, while watching all the smokers walk past to go for their tenth smoke brak of the day while me the diabetic really needs to eat and take my insulin is stuck here  behind the counter not able to leave the department alone because it is considered a high theft area of the store and someone didn't show up for work again to cover my break so I'm feeling faint and leave anyway, screw this my health is more important.

Feeling faint I head up to the lunch room and am stopped by security asking why I left the department alone and told I will be getting a write up, I explain my health concerns and wonder why the smokers can leave their dept vacant, oh yah security smokes with them I forgot!

I continue up the escalator, a male customer walks by and says snarly to me ''It wouldn"t hurt you to smile, do you know how''

I looked at him thinking he was joking, he wasn't, I understand that to be professional with the uniform on you need to be approachable, but at this time I really felt like I was going to pass out, my blood sugar was really high from not taking my insulin, this type of thing was going on at work on a daily basis, not only was my blood sugar high but so was my blood pressure, I took my doctors advise and quit that job!

So to fellow diabetics don't be stupid like I was and let your employers treat you like that!!  I am still in retail at a much better place, alot happier and less stressed if at all!!

Definitely an important part of working, for anyone with diabetes, is the initial busines of making sure your boss understands the health demands of your diabetes!

Here's a link to an article I wrote on one way to possibly go about discussing your diabetes with your new boss!
