Diabetes Discrimination

By Tressa, Health Guide Tuesday, November 27, 2007
3:00 is the worst time of day for me any day of the week. It's the time of day that I'm most sleepy and it doesn't matter where I am... exhaustion hits me like a brick.  Right now I'm trying to stay focused on microbes and bacteria, but this lecture isn't all that captiva...

It's so annoying that he does that. I'm sorry that you have to go thru that at work! At least you know you're stronger than what he thinks of you!

It sucks when people treat you differently for something that you have no control over.  Are they being mean or are they just ignorant?  (or both?)  Would he treat you the same if you were on time?  Were you ever sick enough that you HAD to leave?  Maybe he's just paranoid.  I don't WANT to be everybody's diabetes educator but I think that the more I do the less CRAP I get from people about it.  Once they understand more, they don't flip out everytime I check my BG or take a break!

p.s. what is it about 3pm? I need a siesta!  Maybe we should move to Mexico?

If I were you, I'd ask to talk to him! Since he seems to not really understand your diabetes all that well, say, "Hey, I was wondering I could meet with you before my shift." And then carefully explain: "My diabetes does not interfere with my ability to do my job well. If there were an emergency (which is rare), then I'll be sure to let you know when I'm not able to work. But I'd like to be held to the same standards as everyone else."

Of course, that means you can't show up 15 minutes late :)

And maybe his ignorance, is really his very poor way of showing that he doesn't want you to risk your health for the sake of pastries...
