When Dealing with Doctors You're not Familiar with Stay Alert

I was once told that there would be a day that I'd be in the hospital and I would know more about diabetes then the doctors.

That day has arrived.

For the first time in my life I was hospitalized for something OTHER then diabetes.

I am one who believes that you should trust doctors I mean they didn't go through all that schooling for nothing. They should know what they're doing. But I guess when it comes to...

Pump, Pump, Pump, Pump it Up!

Insulin pumps are everywhere it seems. In fact most diabetics I know already have or are in the process of getting an insulin pump. I think that insulin pumps are a great tool for some. They can help keep blood glucose levels in tighter control and it’s nice to not have to take multiple shots a day. I myself have been struggling to make the decision to become a “pumper” and if there are any of you out there in the same boat...

Don't Worry Mom... I'm a Big Kid Now!

Hello fellow Diabeticals!

Well as the end of the school year is approaching I sure hope that everyone is looking forward to a relaxing summer. As for me, my first year of college has already completed itself and the minute it was over I took the first plane I could to visit my mom and brother in Hawaii.

As I've mentioned before my little brother has also joined the diabetical band wagon so it's always cool to see him and...

Study Yourself!

Like many of you, I too become frustrated when a non-diabetical tells me how I should regulate my diabetes or when they get me confused for a type II diabetic. When this happens, I like to take my time and educate my unknowing (and yet opinionated) fellow man. Today I had a positive experience that I want to share with you. As I’ve stated in previous blogs, I am currently in college with the goal of becoming a...

Diabulimia -- My Story

There's a picture that I keep in a folder in my computer. I take it out to look at time to time, and although I know the girl in the picture (me at 8th grade graduation), I don't recognize the face that stares back. My eyes are sunken in, collar bone protruding because I'm so emaciated -- I'm a walking skeleton. And to think that when that picture was taken I thought I looked incredibly overweight. It was two...

"Ticking Time Bomb"

Well first let me say sorry for the enormous gap in blogs. Finals have definetly taken a lot of my extra time to the point where if I ever find myself having a free moment I'm using it to catch up on some sleep! It’ll be nice for a three-week break from this non-stop way of college and working life for the laid-back island style life with my friends and family. Until then I’m on constant “go mode,” not...

I don't encourage low blood sugar OR mosh pits

Low blood sugar... I don't really think it's fun and after reading a recent blog from Matt I think it's safe to say that it can get you into trouble sometimes and situations where you can harm not only yourself but others as well. Well Matt's blog got me thinking about certain incidences that have happened to me when I was low so I wouldn't think it would be fair for me to continue with writing this blog...

Sick of Diet Cola

So I stopped by Job Number 1 (Pastry Shop) for breakfast this morning only to find out that they were out of my beloved croissants, which happens to be the only meat-free and non sugar loaded food available. I opted for a breakfast sandwich instead. Then, when I went to get my soda, I really wanted Sprite. Temptation won -- I decided to put my cup up to the fountain and wait for the clear, lemon-lime,...

My “Normal” Friends

Now as I'm stopping to think about it, I don't have any "normal" friends -- they're all pretty strange. But I love them all. It's a cliché question -- but what is "normal" anyways? In fact I've seriously considered eradicating the word "normal" from my vocabulary altogether. I spent a good portion of my life since I've been diagnosed worrying about whether I was...

Diabetes Discrimination

3:00 is the worst time of day for me any day of the week. It's the time of day that I'm most sleepy and it doesn't matter where I am... exhaustion hits me like a brick. Right now I'm trying to stay focused on microbes and bacteria, but this lecture isn't all that captivating. I got 11/10 on my last quiz (YAY for extra credit questions) and I'd like to keep the trend up, but alas the sleepiness is prevailing. ...
