Controlling Diabetes during Physical Activity

My name is Shelby and I dance more during the week than I do most other things. Dancing has been a part of my life since I was three years old, and even when I was diagnosed at six I didn't let it slow me down one bit. At first it took getting used to, but now controlling my diabetes when I dance is like second nature.  I look at Type 1 Diabetes as a game. You have to overcome certain challenges and take risks to succeed. With my dance schedule I have to be extra meticulous because one wrong move has my blood sugar shooting all over the place. All of my fellow dancers and teachers know of my disease and help me in any way they can. Checking before and after classes helps me from going low as often and keeping extra snacks on hand is all part of the game. Any game you play you take a chance in losing or getting behind, but if you stay determind and positive all will be okay! :)

Thanks for posting, Shelby!

So...when you go low during dance practice, do you always feel the symptoms or do you ever get distracted by the activity or can't feel the low blood sugar as well?
