I don't go low during dance practice very often because of my careful planning ahead of time. But when those rare occurances do happen I am very well aware it is happening. Personally I feel my low and high blood sugars extremely well. When my blood sugar rises I drink a lot, have to use the bathroom more than normal, get headaches, and usually get cranky. During lows I get shakey, break out in a cold sweat, my heart races, and I feel dizzy. During my dance classes these same symptoms arise. I have only gone low on stage once, and my dance teacher knew what was happening right away and waited for me backstage to get me some sugar. Then she contacted my mom over walkie talkie, because thats how everybody stayed in contact with each other at big events, and my mom came to help also. When I go low in dance class it usually takes me about two carbs and fifteen minutes to come back to a safe number and be able to maintain it. I do experience a low in energy after I go low at any time and I usually get a headache. Knowing how your body reacts with physical activity with trial and error helps you be more controled in the long run. It may throw your numbers off at first and you may have to readjust your insulin doses multiple times, but once you figure it out you feel healthier and happier! I use an insulin pump, and that really helps me keep my numbers under control because I can adjust my basal rate to go lower or higher depending on the amount of excercise I am going to participate in. I have never passed out from a low blood sugar before, and I thank God that I have the symptoms that I do to help me fix it before something bad happens. I am even able to wake myself up out of a deep sleep when my blood sugar is low. Once I woke up in the middle of the night and my blood sugar was 17! Crazy! Let me know your comments please!! :)
