United We Stand...

By DiabeticDancer Friday, July 03, 2009

Having people that can relate to your situation is a comfort that doesn't come along all the time. It seems like in the case of diabetes it's even harder because we are so spread out. People can sympathize with us and realize how much we have to go through on a day to day basis, but no one can really understand unless they go through it too. Meeting fellow diabetics from diabetes camp, internet sites, and in local areas gives us the support we need to stay strong.

Over the ten years that I have lived with diabetes I have met some incredible people that go through exactly what I do and feel the highs and lows of the disease. Some have been just passing acquaintances that understand what your talking about, and others make an impact on how you feel about your life and experiences with diabetes.

It's a cool feeling to be able to trade tricks and different ways that work and don't work with fellow diabetics. There are ways to make diabetes fun! For example... Having contests where you compare blood sugars or having cool nicknames for each other like Diabetes Best Friend and Diabetes Buddy... Some of the people I've met and talk to are ones that will give me the support to stay on top of my disease and try to think of it in a positive mannor.

With knowing there are others out there living with this constant burden just like myself, helps me to feel more hopeful and positive that there will be a cure in our near future! :)

Diabetes isn't just a disease... It's a lifestyle...

I definately agree.  One of my best friends was diagnosed with diabetes when we are sixteen.  I had already had it for five years.  To tell the truth, in the beginning, it was a little wierd, because he wanted to talk about it a lot and I wasn't used to that.  But now, we talk about it all the time.  It is nice to have someone who understands a comment as simple as, "I'm dropping" or, "I have an air bubble!"  However, it also made me realize something really important- everyone is SO different in how they manage their diabetes, and what works for one person doesn't always work for another.
