So, while it may seem "easier" and perhaps even "safer" to compensate for exercise by reducing insulin, I don't recommend this approach.  Instead, I have found that keeping a percentage of the usual basal rate and matching the insulin with high quality carbohydrates is the most effective way to keep blood sugar levels lower and energy levels up.  Working muscles need fuel, but they cannot use any sort of nutrition without insulin to release the carbohydrates into the cell.
