Please help me. I'm overweight :(

By Elizabeth Thursday, March 12, 2009

I am 16 years old. and I weigh 170 lbs. Ive had diabetes for 8 years and about 7 of those years i have been very super skinny. I used to be too thin, and over the past year I gained so much weight. I also developed a habit for eating food all the time and binge eating and emotional eating. I try to eat well but i always want food and always crave food what can i do to stop myself from eating more? Im so depressed with the size of my body. please help me. I always say I want to loose weight but then I just eat and eat.

Thanks for posting Elizabeth. First step with any problem: acknowledging it and asking for help! Second step, let's figure out why you're falling into a pattern of bingeing when your emotions are taking over.

What triggers the binge? What in your life is really bothering you? If you're turning to food when you're upset, it's a common way to avoid dealing with the problem, or even an attempt to treat the problem or maybe "fill an emotional emptiness." There's clearly something going on in your head/heart that's troubling you!

As for simply losing weight, it comes down to the basics...

Check out this "Ask Ginger" from a young girl struggling to lose weight.

Just like a person without diabetes, the healthiest and most effective way to lost bodyfat is by eating well and exercising regularly. There's no quick trick. We have to learn how to take care of ourselves in the long term and be patient for results that come slowly and steadily. Making healthy choices aren't a once and a while thing we need to do, it's a habit we need to learn for the rest of our lives, right?

Hey Elizabeth.

You sound really frustrated and fed up with this weight gain, which is of course understandable. I know how you feel! But just try to be kind to yourself and realize that like Ginger said, nothing is going to change overnight. There is no quick fix to losing weight, whether you're diabetic or not. And there are plenty of tricks or whatever that may look appealing, but will only risk your health and any resulting weight loss will probably be only temporary. Have you thought about seeing a nutritionist or certified diabetes educator? They can be a big help. Trying to conquer bingeing and weight loss on your own is REALLY HARD and it's easy to feel like a failure when you can't do it on your own. The whole getting up each morning telling yourself, "Okay, I'm going to do this and this today and get myself under control.." and then by the end of the day, giving up, feeling you've failed... well, you're not a failure. You just need help and support. I don't know if I'm saying this more for myself or for you!

I am trying to lose weight, too. With diabetes, my weight has been all over the place. So I know how you feel. If you ever need someone to vent to, or anything, please send me a message. Hang in there.

All the best, Abby
