being sick with diabetes.....

By Robyn Sunday, March 08, 2009

so my boyfriend and his daughter both have been sick. one had the flu and the other, a really bad stomach virus. i've had diabetes for 15 years and everytime i get sick, it never fails.i dont want to eat, thus i dont want to take my shots in fear i'll go low, which then i'll have to eat something, and its just a vicious cycle. i woke up this morning and my blood sugars were well over 500, yea anyone knows with numbers like that, no way you can feel good. now i'm like starving but dont want to eat, my stomach is still really upset. eww... shrimp... gross... sorry boyfriend just mentioned it and not what i wanted to hear. sometimes i wish i was just "like everyone else" and not have to take shots or make sure my numbers are good. ugh... sorry just needed to vent. thanks

Hey Robyn,

I hear you on the not wanting to eat but not wanting to go low while you're sick thang!

Here's the deal though, you still really really need insulin when you're sick and still really really need to eat --even if it's just crackers and juice every few hours-- because your body will start to create ketones since you're not giving it food for fuel and insulin to transport that food in your bloodstream!

So that explains why you woke up around 500!

It's a pain in the butt, I know. Even though a non-diabetic doesn't want to eat when they're sick, they still really really should also (even though they're blood sugar will be fine), because your body needs FUEL to help FIGHT OFF THE VIRUS! Right?  We run on food. Our metabolisms slow down when we don't eat and we need everything we can to fight a sickness even though we're in bed all day.

I hope your flu is better by now?? I've got a narly cold myself!

-Ginger
