Mood Swings

By Brandon Saturday, July 18, 2009

I was diagnosed with type 1 about a year ago, over the last year I have said some very hurtful things, than shortly after I realize and feel bad about it. I know this is usually when my sugars are high. We recently broke up because of this. I know its really not me saying all these things. Is this normal, are my mood swings normal?

Absolutely normal.  After a while you begin to recognize that you're moody and you don't really want to speak to anyone.  When I get like this I step aside and check my sugar to make sure it's the 'sugar talking' and not the real me.  Procced with insulin and the situation will get better :)

It's normal. Checking your sugar often will also help, maybe catch ya before you get that high.

Brandon,

Modd swings are very normal with high blood sugars and even low ones. The mood swings tend to be more hurtful when you are high and that is something that you and your loved ones need to learn about. It is an emotional part of this disease that many groups do not deal with or explain.

So let your family and friends know that it isn't your normal way and that when the mood swings to come about be understand and you will try to be also. Saying your sorry after a mood swing usually does the trick in my house but still hurtful things have been said and it took time for my family to understand the process of this disease, but over time they did and work with me as I work with them to better understand what I do wrong.

Give it a chance and some time, it isn't easy for both sides. Talking is the best way to deal with the mood swings. Keep communication open and honest and things should work out.
