So we all grow up with our parents telling us that we can do anything that we put our minds to, you can have any job, anywhere, doing whatever you want. Sure, that's a nice thought and most people can do that. But recently i came to the realization that Diabetes is not cheap. As a profession, I am thinking of going into technical theatre, and most likely there is ZERO insurance for this profession. =( so i am forced to realize the facts, the issues, and the ways to get around this problem.
The Facts: Pumps, pump supplies, CGM, CGM supplies, test strips, endocrinologist visits, insulin, any hospital visit related to diabetes... all of this is wicked expensive. now take into account your salary, all other living expenses, and most likely where does that put you? probably broke, really really broke.
The issues: now, if you decide to buy your insurance, because you have a pre existing condition they won't cover any of that. so you have to pay for all of that out of your pocket, plus about $1,000 a month just for insurance! oh, and they won't even start to cover your diabetes stuff untill at least a year of paying them for insurance that isn't doing you any good.
The ways to get around these problems: Okay so the options are pretty much as follows.... Marry asap after college to some engineer who happens to have an amazing health plan, put yourself into an engineering job which you will hate and regret for the rest of your life, or... well i can't think of anything else that could solve this problem.... except maybe universal health care, but i don't think that's going to happen any time soon. oh well. too bad right? i mean how awesome would it be if Obama happened to get elected as president of the US and managed to fight for this universal health care thing that he's been talking about for pretty much forever? Diabetics of the world unite for insurance!!! (so we can afford to live!)
--Hey, sorry i didn't really mean to drag politics into this but i think it's a valid issue that needs to be addressed, and that insurance companies need to get over themselves and help everyone out! heh, but yeah.... Hooray for blowing off steam! ;]
