Driving a car is a privilege, not a right. This applies to everyone and anyone who gets behind the wheel of a car, not just people with diabetes. Seeing as I just went through the experience of getting my permit, and now my license I know first hand that having diabetes does not affect your ability to obtain these. Different states have different rules about diabetes and licensing, so if you want to know more about your state please click here and then choose your state.

So let’s say that you’ve already gotten your license and are ready to hit the road! Well first off, always always always check your blood sugar before you even turn on the car. Your blood sugar is the main piece of information that should sway your decision on whether you should be driving or not. Too high, or too low, our mental state, decision making, reaction time, are all affected negatively. This makes for a severely dangerous experience on the road. When driving with a high or low blood sugar you pose a threat to yourself, and all of the innocent drivers that are driving with you. also, always keep extra juice or tabs in your car. It’s never ever good to become low while driving and not be able to correct it. So all of you drivers out there! Always check your blood sugars and please always wear your seatbelt. Seatbelts have been shown to drastically reduce your likelihood of having a severe injury when in an accident. Drive safely!
