Driving With Diabetes

Driving a car is a privilege, not a right. This applies to everyone and anyone who gets behind the wheel of a car, not just people with diabetes. Seeing as I just went through the experience of getting my permit, and now my license I know first hand that having diabetes does not affect your ability to obtain these. Different states have different rules about diabetes and licensing, so if you want to know more about your state please click...

Getting Out of Your Diabetes "Slump"

We've all been there. We all know what it's like. Letting your diabetes slip right through your fingers, and everything gets off track. It's easy to let happen, (trust me i know that!) and it can be difficult to get it back on track. However, everyone around you (including us here on diabeteens) are here to help you through this!

Firstly I would like to start off by saying that I am currently in my own little slump, I've let myself...

Prom, Dresses, & Pumps

As any pumper will tell you, pumps and dresses don't exactly mix very well. So what is a girl to do? Well, she could go to prom in a pant suit… or you know, not (where's the fun in that?!?). While pumps are hard to wear in a dress, it is definitely possible. If the dress permits, stuffing it into a bra will generally get the job done (I do this a lot), or if the pump has a clip, clipping it to the back of the dress works as well, but...

Diabetes (noun): a way to define oneself?

Diabetes Mellitus (noun): An endocrine disorder marked by inability to maintain glucose homeostasis. The type I form results from autoimmune destruction of insulin secreting cells; treatment usually requires insulin injections several times a day. The type II form most commonly results from reduced responsiveness of target cells to insulin; obesity and lack of exercise are risk factors.

Diabetes, Diabetes, It's Everywhere!

I don't know about all of you, but lately i've noticed that Diabetes seems to be a "hot topic" on t.v. and in the celeb world now. Of course there's Nick Jonas, everywhere you look its jonas brothers this and jonas brothers that, and ohmygosh! he's diabetic ,with that song a little bit longer, all about his experience with being diagnosed. Now also, in an episode of South Park there's Scott Mallenson " Hi I'm scott malenson and i have...

Diaversary! =)

So today was/is (for another 2 hours) my 14th diaversary. it's weird, because i never really realized exactly what day it fell on, and i never got the chance to stop and really think about it. so fourteen years ago today, i was lying in a hospital crib, begging for water and being stabbed with all kinds of needles, which was soon to become my life. It's a weird feeling to have, but sort of cool. I celebrated it today. and i mean celebrated....

Insurance.

So we all grow up with our parents telling us that we can do anything that we put our minds to, you can have any job, anywhere, doing whatever you want. Sure, that's a nice thought and most people can do that. But recently i came to the realization that Diabetes is not cheap. As a profession, I am thinking of going into technical theatre, and most likely there is ZERO insurance for this profession. =( so i am forced to realize the facts, the...

D&D (Diabetes and Discrimination)

While i realize that i am not the only one who suffers through the discriminations of my peers, only because i am "blessed" with this thing called diabetes, i just can't help but feel alone sometimes. Every year i come home from diabetes camp, and boast about how wonderful it was and how hot the counselors are, and such and such. And every year (all due to a friend of mine saying and i quote "Oh, so it's just like fat camp! .... you know because...

Okay here goes. For a while now i feel as though me in control of my diabetes isn't working as well as it should be. i am not doing nearly as many finger pricks as i should be, and i forget to bolus all of the time. now i really think that it is time for me to make a change for the better and start being more responsible about my diabetes, but i just always forget. there is always something else that pushes doing a finger prick from my...

Diabetes Camp!!!

Diabetes camp is pretty much the most amazing thing ever! I have been going for the past seven years, and i consider my decision to start going to camp one of my best decisions (having to do with diabetes) that i have ever made. Being in one place where everyone around you is going through the same thing you are is a surreal experience. Just try to imagine that you are at school, and every single one of your classmates is...
