Taking care of myself has never looked so good.

By JessicaxKristine Thursday, October 23, 2008

Well as all of you know, i've had some major problems taking care of myself and managing my diabetes. I signed up to this website in July and hadn't been taking care of myself way before then. Well it finally caught up with me, and I hope that if people that read this really take a look at their life and the things and people in it and don't take it for granted.

It had all started on Friday, I was at work and really wasn't feeling well...kinda felt like i was just coming down with a cold, possibly the flu so they let me go home early. As soon as I got home I crashed and went to bed. Saturday I woke up and was feeling worse and had called out of work all together and just spent the day in bed and relaxed. Towards the end of the day I had thought I had started to feel better so I went and ate dinner and such and went to bed. Well Sunday when I woke up I was feeling really weird but I sucked it up cause I wanted at least a little money on my paycheck. That had to have been the hardest day of work in my life, although I only stand at the register all day...it was really hard to do between having really bad back pain and I started to become really short of breath. Once I had gotten home everything got worse, my breathing started to get really weird and it was really hard to catch my breath. I tried laying down and going to sleep but I couldn't and i was having a really hard time controlling my bladder, I was having to go to the bathroom every 5 seconds. So i decieded to take a bath and that's all I really remember. My mom found me in the tub lethargic and gasping for air when she got home from work that night and she rushed me to the ER. Apparently I threw up all over the place and was moaning in pain and couldn't really talk because all my words were slurring together. I was going through Ketoacidosis. Once they got everything that they needed they took me to CHKD where they put me in ICU. The doctor told my mom that if she wouldn't have got me to the ER I would have most definately died. The first 3 days at CHKD they kept me in ICU and just seriously kept watch over me. I wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything because my CO2 levels weren't right and while I was there I also had a lot of problems with my potassium levels.

Now they have me with a new doctor and a new plan and so far i've taken my insulin with every meal and counted every carb :)

Hey Jess,

I'm really glad you're all right! DKA is scary. I remember when I went into DKA when I was 18, and I just felt like I was shutting down. When I went into DKA because I'd spent too much time outside stringing Christmas lights in the winter and the cold killed my insulin. I didn't feel well the night before, really tired, but I thought it was just normal late night exhaustion from being out in the cold so much!

So, looking back, do you think you could think about whatever happened with your insulin or carbs that elevated your blood sugar? Were you able to check your blood sugar at some point during that day?

I'm so glad you're recovered and feeling better---and counting every carb! :)

Hey Jess!

Great blog!  Can you tell us what caused you to go into DKA?  Not enough insulin, being sick, BG being too high for too long?  All of that will help educate others reading your posts!

You sound like you are doing fabulous!  Keep up the good work, it will pay off in spades!  Feeling great, looking great and everyone will see it in your smile!
