The holidays

By JennyO2216 Saturday, November 14, 2009

Hey you guys its jenny! i now have 7 months going on 8 with diabetes.Laughing My favorite time of year is coming. One of the reasons i like this time of year is because of the food!Embarassed 7 months ago i never had to count carbs worry about my bg and take a shot. My family during the holidays makes a lot of food and now my mom is probably freaking out about (if i probably cheat on my diet!) what to make! I've found a lot of low-carb recipes and my mom said that if i can find the ingriedients then we can make them (which i probably won't). Hope everything goes well!

Hey Jenny!

This is my favorite time of the year, too, as you can probably guess from the sharepost I just made about the holidays Cool

Do you like pumpkin pie?? If so, a great low-carb treat is to mix pumpkin from a can (but NOT canned pumpkin pie flavoring,) with some spices and artificial sweetener. You can also add egg and bake it like pumpkin pie, with or without crust. Mmmm. I also use ground nuts instead of flour, sometimes.

Have fun in the kitchen! I'd love to see some of your recipes.

Hey Jenny,

Hopefully you saw Maggie's post, linked above--very helpful!

But meanwhile, yes, diabetes around the holidays, from halloween until after New Years, is definitely challenging, and at times, can make it much harder to relax and have fun at dinners and parties.

What you can talk to your doctor about doing is preparing your blood sugars with more insulin. For instance, the day before Thanksgiving, I'm definitely going to take more Lantus insulin than usual to help me conquer all the carbs of that day that I don't normally eat! Same goes for Christmas-time.

This is called "titrating" your insulin dose. Adjusting it slightly to compensate for different habits or activity.

No one expects you to skip out on all the holidays treats, but if we can beat the sugar to the punch and get enough insulin to cover it, that will help.
