Q: What is the difference between type 1 and 2 diabetes

Hi Angela,

 

The most distinct difference is that people with Type 2 diabetes still usually produce some of their own insulin and they can manage their blood sugars using diet, exericse and medication in the form of pills that help increase insulin sensitivty.

 

People with Type 1 diabetes have stopped producing insulin entirely. They make NO insulin, no matter what, so they are required to not only watch their diet but also take multiple injections of insulin throughout the day.

 

Type 2 for many people can be "cured" in a way by managing their diabetes through diet and exercise. Type 1 is a "chronic illness" which means it is lifelong.
