i have just been reading about diabulimia and you say that losing weight isn't a secret you just exercise and eat healthy, however, im a 22 year old girl and i have been runnning 6 miles a week and cycling 8 miles a week as well as aerobic classes, i eat very healthy and have been doing this for 5 months, i have not lost anything, not one pound and not one inch. losing weight is not that simple for diabetics which is why there has been such an increase in diabulimia. Even i admit its tempting, but i would never put my health at such risk. How do i lose weight!?

Hi Ana,

I hear your frustration - it sounds like you've been working really hard. I'm glad to hear you're resisting the temptation of diabulimia, as soon you would start that behavior you would feel SEVERELY horrible. It's not just feeling kinda high blood sugar for a little while, it's for days and days, horrible. Risking death just to be skinny.

Okay, meanwhile: there could be something other things going  on if you're really not losing weight despite all of the activity you just listed.

A few realistic possibilities:

1. Are you doing too much? If you're exercising a major amount and your body is stressed, several hormones like cortisol are going to increase and force your body to STORE fat. We need to rest even when trying to lose weight.

2. Have you had your thyroid levels checked. If you have a hypoactive thyroid you would feel sluggish, have hair loss and be unable to lose weight.

3. Are you eating enough? Even though you're trying to lose weight, you need to feed your body to keep your metabolism going. Every 3 hours, protein, healthy fats, and minimizing your carbs in the meals you eat later in the day.

What are you eating? I know in my work as a trainer a lot of people say they eat healthy but are unaware how calorically dense or non-nutritious the food is they are eating. Have you ever tried keeping a food journal?

And, are you sure you need to lose weight?
