Q: My diabetes is out of control! What can I do to get my health back on track??

I have struggled with my diabetes since I was diagnosed at age 14. I hate it. I just want to be normal but I know that will never happen. My problem is I have just stopped caring about taking insulin. I have the Omnipod but I could careless if I have one on or not. I run my sugar way to high all the time because it is an easy way for me to loose weight. I hate going about it that way. I wish I could get on a good diabetes diet so I wouldn't have to feel like I have to run my sugar high. I love to eat, but I love to eat healthy things more. If anyone knows a good diet thats not too hard to follow please let me know. My family and mostly my mom is very worried for my health. I want to be healthy but I'm scared I'll gain weight and become unhappy. My A1C is a 12 right now. I really need some help!!

Kristie,

Thanks for writing. It sounds like a lot of things are going on in your life with diabetes right now and when you're ready to start making really good choices for yourself, you will. It won't be easy---but it will be worth it.

Diabulimia is not an option to lose weight. What is the point of being thin if your kidneys are failing and you're damaging your vision?

And there are a lot of healthy things to do to lose weight --but it's not going to be a rapid weightloss, it's going to be gradual and steady. THe idea is to adapt healthy habits into your life that you plan to continue as best you can for the rest of your life -- instead of trying to find a temporary quick fix. Right?

Kristie, it's going to be challenging to change the way you manage your diabetes, but if you care about your life, about your body and your family, you'll be willing to do the hard work and help yourself see diabetes as something that could motivate you to take really great care of yourself!

And you're not alone! Check out some of those posts, and please, leave a sharepost and let us know how you're doing and what we can do for you to help you.

Oh bosom friend, we have finally met! Haha, I'm just kidding ;) But WOW, I know just what your going through Kristie! I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was nine and I'm fifteen now, so I am probably a little younger than you. Well the first few years of having diabetes went pretty well but somehow, somewhere, I started the downhill slide to where I am now, which is an A1C of 11...I don't have a pump but I'm using the pen. Like you, I really do hate having diabetes and sometimes feel like I just haven't excepted that its a part of my life now... :\ I, too, stopped really caring about it and taking care of it, I, too just love food too much. I do have high blood sugars all the time but I really am scared of what they will reap in the future. :( So, really, I don't have any advice for you becasue I myself am trying to get things sorted out, but I just wanted to know I feel exactly the same way and we should talk about stuff sometime! Maybe we can help each other... :) TTYL! Becca
