Q: will my hypoglycemia be affected by my period?

I was recently diagnosed as hypoglycemic. I don't have that bad of a case, really, but I'm really small, so it affects me as it would someone with a more serious case. Usually, if I eat a snack ever 2 ish hours, I feel fine...but now that I'm on my period, I have to eat way more to keep from getting shaky or dizzy or anything...is my period affecting this?

Hey there,I

If you have hypoglycemia (and not diabetes), it does make sense that you would need more fuel during your period because we actually burn more calories during menstrual cycles while your body is shedding the lining of your uterus and dealing with a lot of different hormones that fluctuate at the time, too.

If you're concerned, talk to your doctor, but hypoglycemias primary treatment is too eat carbohydrates regularly, so I would focus on that during the week of your period (and perhaps the few days before it starts). If your low blood sugars become a major problem to the point where you're dropping low too quickly to catch it yourself and feed yourself, talk to your doctor!
