hes only 17, no he cant. when he turns 18 he can get all the tattoos he wants. my brother and i, both type 1, but covered head to toe in tattoos. i would strongly advise against oversized piercings. they generally heal horribly, and become easily infected with diabetes.

I have tattoos, gauged ears, and facial piercings I've also been type 1 for over 10 years.  The key to healing easily is all in blood glucose control.  If your son's blood sugars are out of control he will have a harder time healing.  Personallly, I've never had a problem with the healing process.

I just got one about a month ago; I believe the crucial healing time is in the week or two after the tattoo during which time he should try to keep his control as tight as possible (like Tressa said he'll risk infection with poor blood glucose control).

I (as I normally am) was in good but not perfect control at this time and had no problems whatsoever. Just tell him to keep it clean with antibacterial soap (they should explain all of this to him at the parlor) and keep his glucose in control.
