Im a desperate 18 year old diabetic in my final year at highschool and I would do anything to loose weight.Im on an insulin pump which is supposed to make it more possible to loose weight. The problem is with exercise.....it always makes me lo!I suspend my a half hour before my exercise, during the exercise and for half an hour afterwards...thats an hour in total!!But I still have hypos afterwards!!!Yesterday I ate 2 pieces of fruit without bolusing before my exercise and I still had a hypo....what can I do??Im really annoyed because my doctor told me if I didnt want to eat I wouldnt have to but its just not working out for me.Is there anyone with any advice or any diabetic who has lost weight.

Okay, it's WAY too early to lose hope! This is totally do-able, but we need to fine-tune your approach.

For starters, here are a few articles on exercise/weightloss:

Do you check your blood sugar before working out? When I first began exercising regularly, I checked my blood sugar a lot to figure out what my body needed. I didn't always get it right for a WHILE! But you gotta be persistent.

Try to look at this like a lab experiment for a few days:

1. Check your blood sugar. If you're in range (80 to 120), eat 15 to 30 grams of carbs in the form of fruit, oatmeal, and maybe add some healthy fats too to help sustain the carbs.

2. Workout, after 20 minutes, check your blood sugar. If you're in range still, and don't feel like your dropping or shaky, don't eat more carbs. Continue working out and check again after 15 to 20 minutes.

If you are low when you check after the first 20 minutes, of course eat carbs and let yourself recover.

Different types of exericse do different things to your blood sugar:

Running will make you drop.

Weight lifting can make your BS increase.

Walking can make you drop or keep you entirely stable as it can use just fat for fuel.

Sprints can have less effect on BS because it uses fat for fuel.

***Suspending your insulin twenty minutes before working out won't always help because you already have insulin in your blood and insulin has a peaking point. Even though it starts work within 15 minutes, it's still working hard an hour from then. When you add exercise, you increase it's potency and effect on your blood sugar.****
