Diet Soda and Diabetes -- but HOW MUCH

My husband is a recently-diagnosed diabetes patient. In fact, they now know it is Type 1 (he is 46), and he uses Lantus (AM/PM doses) and Novolog pen.
He drinks a LOT of diet soda.

I mean a LOT -- even if he isn't eating something, he'll open a can and just drink it.
(Often, I believe he should just be drinking water -- i.e. after cuttin lawn, etc).
