Another Drug That Lowers Blood Glucose in Prediabetes

By Dr. Bill Quick, Health Pro Sunday, March 27, 2011

1. Metformin in the DPP didn't prevent diabetes. It just masked it. When the people taking metformin stopped taking the drug, their BGs quickly increased and they had just as much diabetes (I think; haven't seen statistics for a long time) as the control group.

2. "The manufacturer of Actos probably thinks so -- after all, they funded the study. And one of their researchers is quoted as saying "If someone is at high risk, then I would, in addition to trying to get them to lose weight and exercise, recommend medication, and personally, I favor pioglitazone. If you can really lose 30 pounds -- or whatever it is you need to lose -- then you might be able to discontinue the medication."

This is typical of the idiocy we see in diabetes control. You give a patient with a lifelong weight problem a drug that makes you gain weight even more easily and then say all the patient needs to do is lose 30 pounds! The drug company researcher didn't say "If you can lose 30 pounds without the medication, then you won't need to take it." Instead he/she suggested taking the drug, losing 30 pounds, and discontinuing the drug. Yeah, right.
