Type 1 and Too Skinny

By Dr. Bill Quick, Health Pro Monday, September 05, 2011
I received the following e-mail question: "My grandson is always hungry, eats huge amounts of food (which no one can afford). He is type 1, weighs 159 pounds, is 21 years of age and is 5'10".  What is causing this?  What can we do to correct the problem? He is skinny -- too skinny!&nbs...

Isn't it ironic!!  We have a weight problem in the country and someone who appears to be within the right weight/height ratio gets critized!  My step son at 18, was 6'1" and 148(on a good day) and eating about 3000 calories a day. He ate extremely well, but could not put on weight.  Medically, no one ever commented about it.  He's now 28 and in the right weight ratio.

A few years ago, I was running quite a bit and doing yoga 2-3 times a week and my height and weight were normal, if not a squeak high.  My height is 5'3 3/4 and my weight was 122. Most people told me I was too thin, or comments were made that I needed eat more.  I really think it's important that people look at lifestyle, eating habits and age before they throw out the "too thin" comment.  A healthy body tends to be lean and not pudgy!
