Nutritionists continue to tell people with diabetes to eat high carb diets that make blood sugar control via diet alone impossible and cause them to have to use huge and damaging doses of insulin.
They tell people that if they don't eat 120 grams of carbs a day their brains will stop working. (Coulda fooled me, I've published 4 successful books eating 60 g a day. Amazing what you can do without a brain.)
They tell them low carb diets will hurt their kidneys when in fact, this is not true.
There are exceptions but remember that degreed nutritionists are the same people who put together hospital menus.
The online community is providing much better advice than any "trained" nutritionist trained 10 years ago when the low fat delusion was in full swing. Sad, but true.
I certainly agree with Doc Quick, when I was diagnosed a year ago, my endo gave me a paper with a meal plan to follow. At the same time I was very over weight and so was instructed to loose weight also. Looking at the meal plan on the paper, I knew that I would never be able to loose weight on the plan he gave me, it was loaded with breads, sugars, high carb foods. I was ushered out of his office quickly ( I think in hopes that I would not ask any questions). I did contact my medical insurance diabetic nutritonist and had a few phone calls with her but never felt that I got clear instructions. I fumbled around reading and then settled on the south beach diet. I have lost 65 lbs, my glucose readings along with lowered cholesterol/triglycerides are all normal and below. I am going by my glucose readings and blood panel readings in saying I found the diet that works for me but I never really got satisfactory information from any diabetic professional. Needless to say I was very disappointed in the attitude of both my endo and the nutritionist.
OH GOOD GRIEF.
I have gone to seminars for diabetics with "trained" dietions. I have seen "educators". I do have a "good" health group. There is no way that I could eat what they are recomending. Starch drives my body/ blood sugar nuts!
What do you do when your teacher is out of touch with reality? You go to the internet and find health central and prowl around Mendosa.com. Eat low carb, consider south beach....but go to soneone trained in the ADA 120 and above grams of carbs per day school. Not after you start checking BG before and after meals.
The test test test school worked for me.

Hello Dr. Quick -
Thanks for your sharepost. I am fairly new to diabetes management (through my husband who was recently diagnosed) and so I have been reading through a lot of people's blogs on the internet. I am very surprised that most people don't take what they eat very seriously. My husband isn't the best at paying attention to what he eats, but after being diagnosed he has been getting his butt into high gear and really taking it VERY seriously. I know some people, who are type I, who just go ahead and eat the sugar that they want to (even much more than someone without diabetes would) and then would just pump the amount of insulin in to cover it. That just doesn't sound that healthy to me...
Anyhow - thanks for the reminder. I hope I bump into this post again in a few months from now. :-)
Kathy.
