The CDE credential

Many of us in the field of diabetes care are now very used to the CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator) credential. It's a worthy addition to the alphabet soup that health professionals stick after their names to indicate what training they've completed, so you might see someone who gives their name as "...

Thanks Dr Bill, for helping set up this credential.

Not a week goes by without me being reminded in varied ways about how valuable this credential has been for me, carrying me into fascinating work beyond my nursing degree.

An FIY re: the recertification process: "Beginning in 2010, certification renewal requirements will also include 1,000 hours of professional practice some time during the five-year certification cycle, in addition to either taking the Examination or renewing by continuing education." from 2008 Certification Handbook for Diabetes Educators from the NCBDE.

The certification and recert processes are rigorous, but it makes those 3 little letters - "CDE" - even more valuable.

Sincerely,
Karen LaVine, RN and also a CDE for 10 year
