Salivary testing for diabetes

An intriguing abstract was presented at the recent AACE meeting, titled Salivary biomarkers of type 2 diabetes: proteomic profiles for non-invasive diagnostics. The authors identified another way to look for cases of diabetes besides blood glucose testing. (For those of you who want to read it, it's...

The work being done on the proteome through salivaly diagnostics has grown exponentially over the past few years.  Researchers are also close to identifying the biomarkers in saliva for a variety of cancer.  Dr. David Wong at UCLA has been developing a point-of-care system to take to patients in the field for oral cacner screening.  The assay will no doubt be able to one day soon test for daibetes as well.  There are alos a number of studies linking periodontal disease and the onset of Type 2 Diabetes.  I'd be happy to chat more or contribute some information if you think would be useful.

The work on saliva analysis, and malfunctioning of saliva protiens has been a focus of attention by many researchers. The most important findings has been demonstrated by Dr Tarig Arbab,(Abstract published at the AACE annual meetings 2007, 2008) when he discovered a direct relation between Type1, Type 2 DM and saliva protiens and enzymes malfunctions
