nice post- i utterly agree with your advice about weight gain- i have had many new diabetics (type 2) who want to gain weight because they 'got skinny' from the uncontrolled DM- i always tell them that this is the one bright side to the early DM- if they can keep off the weight that they lost, with an adjustment in lifestyle, they may be able to minimize the effects of DM- for the (relatively) younger men, i tell them it's ok if they want to gain some weight back, but to make sure it's muscle, so exercise- this is another bright side to new insulin rx- you mentioned fat, but insulin will also help to build muscle if a new exercise regimen is started
