Non-Caloric Sweeteners for Diabetics

I have frequently been in restaurants that have containers at each table containing packets of sweeteners: the white ones contain sugar, pink is saccharin, and blue is aspartame. I happen to like the yellow stuff: sucralose itself is white, but the packets are yellow, and so I somewhat illogically c...

I too go by the colors so was pleased (ages ago) to get some stevia in green but then later in white. most disconcerting!

stevia has been manufactured since the 70s, but was blocked entrance into the US by the FDA for corrupt, rather than prudential reasons, based upon the following evidence- 1- the then head of the FDA subsequently took a position for the manufacturers of nutrasweet; 2- the 'complainant' against stevia was deleted from the public record; 3- the FDA cleared stevia as a supplement rather than an additive (thereby functionally banning it); 4- the FDA cleared stevia not upon researching evidence, but rather as soon as Coke and Pepsi could patent 'reba A'; the moral here is that the FDA was corrupted by artificial sweetener industry lobbying cash, and blocked an indeed natural sweetener from the american consumer, who was forced to choose between the least harmful chemical sweetener- this is an important pattern to recognize in the drug industry in general: patented products will be cleared and researched much more heavily than natural alternatives

I'm allergic/sensitive to cane and beets and had a hard time avoiding sugar since it's in everything!   I was thrilled when Nutrasweet came out, enjoyed all kinds of foods I had been avoiding.  However, my memory seemed to get worse and worse and a friend who had read negative reports about it, suggested I stop it and see what happened.  I did, and my memory slowly returned to it normal.

I personally believe the FDA is a corrupt agency or at least the people at the top.  They have banned vitamins so drug companies can patent them.  They allow the GRAS label on many items with no studies, whatsoever.  The Standard American Diet is an huge example. Look around at people eating it.  The name says it all: "S.A.D."

Since we stopped using foods with MSG and HFCS and other chemicals, I'm feeling much better overall, and my diabetic husband is losing weight and AIC is down from 7.8 to 6.4.  He's not hungry all the time now, I believe the people who think the additives make you eat more!

The other problem with the FDA, is the Congress, which has cut it's budget.  There is NO WAY they can check everything they are entrusted to do:  foreign imports, remember Melamine?  Lead?  Keep up with domestic produce and meat:  Remember e-coli in meat and Spinach and salsa?  So much for protection!
