Some of the problem is because of laws that prohibit using food left over from commercial establishments. For example, it's illegal to give garbage to pigs unless you first boil it, and most restaurants have tons of garbage. And there are other health regulations, all designed to protect us from communicable diseases, but that result in much food waste.

 

With the turkey, I'd recommend making up TV dinner plates of leftover Thanksgiving dinner and heating and serving weeks later when you're too tired to cook.
