Hi Ginger,
I just now started reading your blog and I really loved this entry! I am a 21 year old college student, diagnosed just over a year ago with type 1 diabetest and I, too, am very hopeful for a cure. When I imagine the future I don't imagine being a 30 or 40 year old diabetic. This pumpkin stuff is great and I just read an article about something that cured type 1 in mice and they are about to start human testing.
I read in one of your other posts that you used to be on the pump. I currently take shots (novalog and lantus) but am considering the pump. I am wondering what you liked/disliked about it and why you no longer use it.
Thanks!

HI!
Thanks for writing.
I actually LOVED my pump for many years. I stopped using it because of many things that were much more personal preferences than an issue with the pump. I would encourage everyone to give the pump a try. Personally, I did get tired of being attached to it (after about 5 years on it) and my skin reacted very sensitively to it (also after 5 years). I have sensitive skin, so I would say this was just a personal issue. I also became involved with contact sports like jiujitsu and boxing, so it was definitely not a good idea for those. As someone who does yoga a lot now, I would find the pump to be a problem for my skin because the insertion site would get irritated by the stretching and movement. Basically, I would encourage you to the give the pump a try because it does offer incredibly flexibility with your eating schedules and helps you learn about what your body's real basal rate needs are throughout the day...

Contact Diaprousa in Henderson NV and they will send you some free to try.
Pumpkin Pentose should be taken along with your medications. It stops the liver produced glucose immediately and over a long time will help reduce your insulin needs. Maybe altogether but everyone is different. Any decrease in insulin to any diabetic is a plus. The elimination of liver produced glucose can help you hold off complications.
I would not be surprised, with how quickly medicine and science have been moving in recent years, if a cure is indeed found in our lifetime. And while it doesn't apply to me personally, I will be cheering right alongside you when that day comes.
It's always better to hear about a potential cure for a change instead of something negative anyway, right? Even if it's just to show you that there is plenty of hope out there.
