When you go to the hospital in DKA, of course you can't plan ahead. But the second horror story is a good reason to establish before any kind of elective admission exactly what your treatment will be. That will give them time to research the issue so they don't come off as the complete dolts they apparently were, and it gives the patient time to say, "Well, if you're not going to give me my basal insulin, I'll go somewhere else for the surgery."
You are so, so right. You have to trust your instincts and listen to your body because it knows best what you need. Of course in some cases it needs to be within reason and if you have a craving for rocky road ice cream you can't give in or if you want a sandwich, instead of fried chicken'n'cheese on white bun better have grilled one with veggies in pita bread, preferably certified for diabetics like Joseph's Bakery's one, but te point is, when you need something ad you know it, you better have the guts to say it out loud.
Ginger, this subject is so true! Medical Practitioners can be so wise but at times they can be deadly wrong. Never be afraid to disagree and speak up for what you know is right, what is going on with your body. Fortunately I have a fantastic Endo who says to me "you are your own best doctor". Remember that these people spend but years of studying, you spend your lifetime.
Ah! I that if a doctor can say that phrase to you, you have struck gold!!! I am still in search of a doctor as excellent as yours. Thanks for reading, George!
