Read "Rethinking Thin"

Thursday, August 09, 2007 at 06:19 PMGina Kolata's book illuminates a lot of the issues surrounding the "obesity epidemic." Most of us who are obese (I am one) do not like being this way. Heredity has far more to do with it than willpower, character, stress, laziness, or personal worth. You didn't ask to have diabetes. I didn't ask to be fat. Both of us get to take these conditions into account and STILL try to be healthy people.

Friday, August 10, 2007 at 02:23 PMJane--Thanks for writing. You bring up an excellent aspect of weight-struggles that I overlooked. And while hereditary issues have proven to be a part of the problem--and not something I personally know too much in depth about--I would still like to encourage those dealing with that aspect to continue working hard towards finding a way for they themselves to personally fight their genetic disposition and not give up! Of course, there are many who are not struggling with weight because of a heredity, and their "battle with the buldge" is much more simple. Thanks for pointing out this issue and I apologize for having offended you and overlooking this serious part of the issue.
