According to the Life Extension Foundation, metformin is a good medicine to be on. It may even help you in your effort to lose more weight! Congratulations on what you have already achieved by the way!

    Best to you,

    Hey Mary,

I am also on Metformin, I have been for several years. You can read more information about Metformin here on the medicines database.

When I was first diagnosed, my A1c was almost 9! Whoo! First I was put on 1000mg a day, but then I was bumped to 2000mg a day. Now a couple years later, my A1c hovers around 6-6.5. The metformin is a good reception enhancer, but it does have a side effect or two, at least for me it did. When I first started the Metformin, the first couple days, I had some gastro distress. It goes away as quickly as it came. But if I forget a dose, the gastro distress comes back. Other than that it's been great. I am also on 4mg a day of Amaryl. I am working on the weight loss now which will help me bring down the doses of the medication. I hope I will not have to go on insulin and I am working hard to avoid it. (I understand almost all type 2's do at some point)

Good luck with your treatment. Stay in touch and let us know how you're doing!

I was on Metformin... seems like I have been on almost everything. I chose to go on insulin (I am a type 2) because I just couldn't control my eating... And I gained more weight... I am a binge eater and was a purger for about 20 years... when I quit purging I gained more weight and soon was diagnosed borderline... I could never leave the "diet" mind set... Food was still my best friend and worst enemy... I have recently started Symlin... My blood sugars are coming down but I am not there yet....

I guess I am trying to make sure you are trying your hardest to control them with diet because the meds get to be too much~

In response to Mary and her concerns about metformin, I've taken Fortamet (extended release metformin) for about three months now without any adverse response.  In that time, I've slightly reduced the amount of insulin I take and have lost about ten pounds without changing anything about my lifestyle or eating habits.  I am presently taking 2000 mg a day, working up 500 mg at a time from a starting dose of 500 mg a day.  Diet and exercise are excellent ways to control diabetes, but don't be afraid to try metformin if your doctor recommends it.

If you can get good results with a balanced diet and exercise, of course, that's always the best way.  If you need the help of medication, though, I recommend metformin based on my personal experience.  Whichever way you go, good luck!d

I was on metformin for nearly a year and had so many health issues I though I had chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, with severe GERD to boot, and other things I've forgotten. I accidentally stumbled on an article indicating that at least some of my problems could be side-effects. Tapered off, got VERY stringent about dieting and now 35 lbs lighter, and am stable with normal range numbers and no meds.

Stay off it if you can. Be alert to health changes if you go on it.

I wish you all the luck in the world.  However, a1c of 7 is pretty high so be careful you are not putting yourself at risk of complications.  It means your average daily BG is around 179/9.5 which is no joke.

    Hi Hat776,

Not sure what your A1C #'s are, but my doctor was very happy for me to be 6.5 - 6.8 and did not seem too worried when I was at 7 because I was coming down from having been 8.8 at my worst.

I have seen folks here who have A1C's of 12+ so I am not sure what the alarm is.

    Thanks!

My a1c is 6 - not too bad.  However, I read that an a1c of 6 means a daily average BG is around 7.5/135.  A1c of 7 is 9.5/170.

Like you when I see A1c`s of 12+ (19.5/345) it is rather frightening.  It means that either they are newly diagnosed and medication hasn`t yet started taking effect or the BG is totally out of control.

    Hi Hat776,

How are you doing lately? I have a dr appointment on 3/13, but I have been a bad girl. Embarassed

I was prescribed Byetta 2 months ago, but finally got the prescription filled and am hoping it helps bring my Gl's down a little. I am afraid to know what my A1C will be next month!

    Hope you are doing well!

I wish all the luck to whoever manages to bring down their A1C diet and exercise.

I am careful with my diet.  Struggle to stop nibbling in the evening.  Go walking every day but even though I am on Metmorfin I don`t manage to get my A1C below 6.  I know 6 isn`t
